Hospitalized Preschoolers¢¥ Perceptions of the Illness and Internal Body Organs


Abstract
This study¢¥s object is to explore the hospitalized preschoolers¢¥ perceptions of internal body organs, pain site and pain pattern in light of their medical diagnosis and to investigate how they understand the cause of illness and treatment.
25 hospitalized preschoolers were interviewed and asked to draw their internal body organs.
The results were summerized as follows.
1. 8 % of hospitalized preschoolers mentioned the internal body organ which they had medical problems.
2. 36 % of hospitalized preschoolers who had gastro-intestinal and renal problems perceived their pain site.
3. 50 % of hsopitalized preschoolers who had gastro-intestinal problem explained "vomiting" and "diarrhea".
53 % of hospitalized preschoolers who had respiratory problem explained "coughing" "fever" and "common cold".
4. 52 % of hospitalized preschoolers believed that illness was punishment.
5. 38 % of hospitalized preschoolers perceived that changing their bad behaviors was treatment.
